Medicare Savings Program

June 17, 2010 by David Luhman

States have programs for people with limited income and resources that pay some or all of Medicare’s premiums and may pay Medicare deductibles and coinsurance.

Please see here to find information on a state-by-state basis.

Help with medical bills to prove disability

November 14, 2011 by David Luhman

Sorry, I haven't seen anything specific to help with your situation. However, you may want to look into Medicaid if you haven't already.

Medicaid is a state-run health insurance program. It is partially funded by the Federal Government. It helps many people who cannot afford medical care pay for some or all of their medical bills. Medicaid is available to people and families who have limited income and resources.

To apply for Medicaid or to request more information about Medicaid, call your state medical assistance office. To get the local phone number, call the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services at 1-800-633-4227.

It's also possible that some third-party services (ex. medical/legal) may offer medical services for the purpose of proving disability on a contingent basis. So they would fund your medical bills now in exchange for a portion of any expected future disability benefits. Please shop around and consider the long-term consequences of this if you choose this route.

Medicare card

I have not received my Medicare card but I am having the premiums taken from my check each month. We did move in the last 6 months but I need the card. How do I get a Medicare card?

Receiving Medicare card

November 15, 2012 by David Luhman

You can request a Medicare card here :

http://www.socialsecurity.gov/medicarecard/

If you prefer, or if you are unable to use the online request to obtain a replacement Medicare card, call SSA's toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778).

Extremely Poor Customer Service

April 3, 2013 by Guest

The automated system is horrible and completely ineffective. It does not answer questions correctly. It hangs up on callers. It is impossible to get a correct answer to simple questions. It will not connect callers to an actual person. It is more poor run than the National Budget.
