To apply for survivor's benefits you can do one of two things :

- Call the toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, call the "TTY" number, 1-800-325-0778.

Reporting change in employment

January 27, 2009 by David Luhman

Not sure why you need to report change in employment, but this is needed in some cases.

For example, for SSI beneficiaries, you must report changes in income. To report this, call the SSA a

You can report changes by calling the SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213. (If you are deaf or hard-of-hearing, you may call our TTY number, 1-800-325-0778.) When you call, please have your Social Security number handy. You also can report changes by mail or in person. If you send a letter, be sure it shows:
* The name of the person for whom you are reporting the change;
* The Social Security number of the person who gets SSI;
* The change being reported;
* The date the change happened; and
* Your signature, address and phone number.

I need to have Federal Income Tax withheld from my SS check. How do I get this done?

Federal income tax withholding on benefit checks

February 4, 2009 by David Luhman

You can ask Social Security to withhold federal taxes from your Social Security when you apply for benefits.

If you are already receiving benefits or if you want to change or stop your withholding, you'll need a form W-4V from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

See this page for details : http://www.socialsecurity.gov/planners/taxwithold.htm

Numident

February 9, 2009 by David Luhman

This is probably a reference to the Numident. The Numident is an electronic record of the information contained on an individual's original application for an SSN and subsequent applications for replacement cards. Numident printouts are not issued by SSA field offices. To obtain a Numident printout, an individual must send a written request to SSA's Central Office and pay a $16 fee.

Spousal retirement benefits

February 18, 2009 by David Luhman

If you are divorced, but your marriage lasted 10 years or longer, you can receive benefits on your ex-spouse's record (even if he or she has remarried) if:

  • You are unmarried;
  • You are age 62 or older;
  • The benefit you are entitled to receive based on your own work is less than the benefit you would receive based on your ex-spouse's work; and
  • Your ex-spouse is entitled to Social Security retirement or disability benefits.

If you remarry, you generally cannot collect benefits on your former spouse's record unless your later marriage ends (whether by death, divorce or annulment).

Child Relationship Statement and benefit eligibility

February 17, 2011 by Lisa l (not verified)

On March 1, 2011 the State of Washington terminated any TANF benefits for minor children in the home of a social security receipient. This means that the SSI I receive will now be the only income into our home.

Because of this mandated state change would my child be eligible for some sort of funds from SSI due to his dependency factor upon me solely.

I am his sole custodian and his father is not working and receiving GAU due to the fact he cannot work due to his drug use. and psycological condition.

It is my understanding that the SSI I currently receive is based on my own social security need.

My child should be supported by his father (I have a Court order but he doesn't pay) or by state assistance. Since neither of these exist, how does this affect my situation?

This is a very confusing situation to say the least. Please advise me.

Qualifying for SSI

February 18, 2011 by David Luhman

We primarily cover Social Security and have limited knowledge of TANF.

SSI makes monthly payments to people who have low income and few resources and are:
* Age 65 or older;
* Blind; or
* Disabled.
Disabled or blind children also can receive SSI.
