Effect of Social Security survivor benefit on SSI

Please contact the SSA directly for your individual situation. However, it looks like receipt of survivor benefits may impact your step-son's SSI payment.

SSI payments can be affected by other income you have. Social Security benefits are called "Unearned Income".

Here is an example provided by the SSA :

EXAMPLE : SSI Federal Benefit with UNEARNED INCOME

Total monthly income = $300 (Social Security benefit)

    $300 (Social Security benefit)
     -20 (Not counted)
    ----
    $280 (Countable income)

    $674 (SSI Federal benefit rate)
    -280 (Countable income)
    ----
    $394 (SSI Federal benefit)
