Brooklyn Social Security Office Notes

Social Security Card Centers
If you live in the Brooklyn or Queens area, you may need to go to a 'card center' instead of a 'field office'. Card centers are centralized processing sites for all Social Security number applications for area residents. You must visit a card center if you need a Social Security card, your personal information needs updating, or your employer asked you to visit a Social Security office.

For other needs (ex. applying for benefits) you may visit the field office listed above.

Try Social Security's online services like getting an earnings statement at ssa.gov. Social Security office hours have been cut in the past couple years. Office hours are generally 9:00 to noon on Wednesdays, and 9:00 to 3:00 on other weekdays. Fridays may be less crowded. Call first to see if you can get an appointment.

WANT TO USE LATE HUSBAND'S SURNAME STILL

Thursday, March 10, 2011 - 12:53 by Guest

Would like to ask if I can keep my late husband's surname after being married again, for legal purposes and in respect of? My new hubby and I were married here in Saint Louis Missouri...

SAMPLE:
Here's my name when I was married with my late husband:
FIRST NAME: M...
MIDDLE NAME: CAS.. (my father's surname)
SURNAME: GARCIA (my late husband's surname)

NOW THAT AM MARRIED AGAIN, CAN I HAVE MY NAME LIKE THIS:

FIRST NAME: M...
MIDDLE NAME: CAS...-GAR...
SURNAME: S... (my new husband's surname)

PLEASE HELP!Am about to PRINT my AOS FORMS(immigration), and I want to be right and sure before doing so to avoid mistakes, save ink and all...God bless and thank you.

Name change

Thursday, March 10, 2011 - 19:00 by David Luhman

We can only comment as to name change for Social Security card purposes. We can't comment as to "AOS Forms".

For SS card purposes, you must show a recently issued document as proof of your legal name change. Documents the SSA may accept to prove a legal name change include:

* Marriage document;
* Divorce decree;
* Certificate of Naturalization showing a new name; or
* Court order for a name change.

In other words, you need to change your name legally first (via marriage or court order), then you can change per Social Security.
