Mesa Social Security Office Notes

Social Security Card Centers
If you live in the Phoenix area, you may need to go to a 'card center' instead of a 'field office'. Card centers are centralized processing sites for all Social Security number applications for area residents. You must visit a card center if you need a Social Security card, your personal information needs updating, or your employer asked you to visit a Social Security office.

For other needs (ex. applying for benefits) you may visit the field office listed above.

You can do many things like signup for retirement benefits online at ssa.gov. Social Security office hours have been reduced the past few years. Now almost all Social Security offices have the same hours of 9:00 to noon on Wednesdays, and 9:00 to 3:00 on other weekdays. Fridays may be a bit less crowded. Try to get an appointment by phone first.

Can ex-husband legally keep daughter's backpay from SSI

Tuesday, July 5, 2011 - 15:52 by Guest

My daughter received a large SSI backpay check a few months ago due to my husband's disability. He took the money from me and hid it. I am the designated payee for her because she is a minor. He claims it is his money and his right to hold it back from her. If she and I move out would he be forced to turn over the money to me (for her day to day needs and saving)? Also, would she continue to get her monthly benefits even if she does not live in his home?

Representative payee - back payments and custody issues

Wednesday, July 6, 2011 - 21:20 by David Luhman

Sorry, I couldn't find anything to help with this.

You mention you're the "designated payee". Social Security refers to a "Representative Payee" who should receive benefits on behalf of a child or another who may have trouble managing benefit payments. If you're the "Representative Payee" recognized by Social Security you should have a strong case regarding control of the back payment and future benefits.

Please contact Social Security directly for this.
