Family Asset Limit for Disabled Child

Tuesday, September 13, 2011 - 09:23 by Guest

We have a severely disabled 10 year old, and we have our state's (Missouri) medicaid waiver to help with her care. It is my understanding that she does not qualify for SSI unless our total assets as a family are less than $3,000. Is this correct?

Asset (resource) limit for SSI

Tuesday, September 13, 2011 - 21:35 by David Luhman

SSI is intended for folks with limited incomes and limited assets.

If a child under age 18 lives with one parent, the asset limit is $2,000. If the child lives with 2 parents, the asset limit is $3,000.

However, in several assets are not counted in this $2k/$3k limit. Most notably, for SSI, they do not count the home you live in and the land it is on and household goods and personal effects (e.g., your wedding and engagement rings).

Parental income may also affect any potential SSI benefit for the child.

Please contact Social Security directly for your particular case.
