Impossible to contact

Two days trying to telephone the CLEARWATER Social Security Office to no avail (727 797 0387). Yesterday I put on earphones & held the call for an hour-the only message I got was "thank you for continuing to hold, your call is IMPORTANT to us, you will be assisted by our next available representative." I also tried the National 800 number and they didn't even take the call. What is going on?

We're not affiliated with the SSA, but you may want to try calling later in the week. Call volume is reportedly higher earlier in the day.

Telephoning Social Security

Never bother to telephone Social Security unless you want to find out what hours they are open or what music they play over the phone. Write something on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope, address it and put a stamp on it.

When you call Social Security, you will talk to someone who will be pretending to check on your matter, but actually they merely tell you what you want to hear. A question such as "When will I receive my check?" will invariably be answered "On the first [second, third] of the month." (whatever day that month beneficiaries are supposed to receive a check).

They will say that you have been approved for benefits when you have not. They will tell you that your address has been changed, if you have changed your address, when it has not. They will tell you that your payee is acceptable when he or she is not.

It is not their function to care whether you actually change your plans based on the information they give you. Do not do so.

If you get someone when you call (!) who actually looks up your case on the computer, they will usually just look at the last information entered. If you keep calling (!!) they will see that someone else told you such-and-such and they will tell you the same thing. Call back (!!!). They will look up your most recent previous contact and tell you the same thing.

After a while there may be an update in the information for the entire country, and then you will get a different answer. Do not be fooled, they are not looking at your case when they tell you something new -- it's a new day and new information. It doesn't apply to you personally. But it will be entered in your case contact and you will get the same information when you call back.

This is how telephone calls are handled by the barely-computer-literate employees at Social Security. Thank you for allowing me to explain this.
