New York Social Security Office Notes

Social Security Card Centers
If you live in the Brooklyn or Queens area, you may need to go to a 'card center' instead of a 'field office'. Card centers are centralized processing sites for all Social Security number applications for area residents. You must visit a card center if you need a Social Security card, your personal information needs updating, or your employer asked you to visit a Social Security office.

For other needs (ex. applying for benefits) you may visit the field office listed above.

Try online services like setting up direct deposit at ssa.gov. Social Security office hours were cut in November, 2012. Now, generally, all Social Security offices are open 9:00 to 3:00, except Wednesdays when hours are 9:00 to noon. Try calling to get an appointment before travelling. Fridays may be more open.

SSI plus SS benefits

Monday, June 28, 2010 - 10:04 by Guest

I am 62 years old and receive SSI. I was married for 31 years but have been divorced for 15. My ex husband says I can file for his SS benefits. Can I receive both SSI AND his SS benefits at the same time? I only receive $674 a month right now, plus $74 in food stamps and Medicaid. I dont want to lose my SSI or Medicaid benefits if I do file on his Social Security. Any information would be appreciated. I live in Texas.

SSI and other Social Security benefits

Please contact Social Security directly for information about your specific case.

If you have worked and paid into Social Security long enough, you also may be eligible for Social Security benefits while you are receiving SSI. Retirement benefits can be paid to people age 62 or older and their families.

In general, Social Security benefits are counted as unearned income that may reduce your SSI payment. However, your total benefit (SS retirement + reduced SSI) may be greater than SSI alone.
